Tour FAQs
What is a tidal pool?
A tidal pool is a seawater pool built into the rocky shoreline, designed to fill naturally with the tide. It offers a sheltered place to swim and explore marine life, while remaining closely connected to the ocean and its rhythms.
What is a tidal pool hop?
Tidal pool hops are swims in clusters of tidal pools done one after the other in a short period of time, such as a morning. Pools that are located close together are popular destinations for groups of people celebrating birthdays and other special events.
How is a tidal pool hop different from a tidal pool tour?
A tidal pool hop is about moving with the water. It’s informal, flexible, and led by the pace of the group and the day — with plenty of time to swim, float, pause, and enjoy being in and around the pools.
A tidal pool tour is more guided and narrative-led. It still includes swimming, but places greater emphasis on storytelling, history, ecology, and the wider cultural context of the pools, with a clearer structure and learning arc.
Can I book a private tour?
Yes! All of our experiences can be booked privately. We regularly design bespoke outings for couples, families, birthday celebrations, and corporate groups. Just get in touch and we’ll help shape something that fits what you have in mind — from timing and pace to location and focus.
What is the best time of day for a tidal pool or ocean experience in Cape Town?
Early mornings or mornings are usually best. Conditions tend to be calmer, it’s generally quieter, and in summer the Cape’s south-easterly wind (the “Cape Doctor”) often picks up later in the day, which can make the ocean more challenging.
What should I bring?
Bring a swimsuit, a warm towel or robe (or let us know when you book if you need a towel – we’ve got you covered), and something dry to change into. We recommend warm layers, a hat, sunscreen, and water. We’ll let you know in advance if there’s anything specific to bring for your chosen experience.
How cold is the water?
It varies by season and location. On the Atlantic Seaboard side it can go down to 9 degrees C in Winter, but it generally hovers about 15 – 18 degrees in Summer. On the False Bay side the temperature is relatively stable hovering at between 14 – 21 degrees C in Summer.
Can children join the tour?
Tidal pool hops are currently for ages 14 and up. We’ll be offering family-friendly tidal pool hops soon — sign up for our newsletter to be the first to hear when dates are released.
Children are welcome on tidal pool tours, and they remain the responsibility of their parent or guardian. Please let us know their ages on the booking form so we can plan appropriately.
If you’d like a bespoke or private experience, just share the ages of the children in your group and we’ll make sure the right guide-to-guest ratio is in place to keep everyone safe and comfortable.
When is the best time of year to book?
There’s no wrong season. Summer in Cape Town and the Western Cape is ideal for outdoor and ocean experiences, with warmer days and calmer conditions. Winter brings a different kind of magic — wilder seas, dramatic light, and a real sense of adventure for those happy to meet the elements.
Do I have to be a strong swimmer to join?
No. For tidal pool experiences, there’s no requirement to be a strong swimmer. We’ll check in on your confidence level before we start, and you’re always welcome to dip, swim with your feet off the bottom, or simply watch and enjoy the surroundings.
For wild swimming experiences, it’s best if you can swim at least 100 metres unassisted.
Which tidal pools will we visit?
Some experiences have set routes — like the Cape Point Trilogy — where the pools are predetermined. For others, we keep things flexible and choose pools based on the day’s weather, tide, and conditions. If you have specific pools you’d like to visit, just let us know and we’ll do our best to include them.
What is wild swimming?
Wild swimming means swimming in natural bodies of water — the sea, rivers, or pools — rather than in heated or managed facilities. It’s about moving with the conditions, paying attention to the environment, and enjoying the experience of being in open water, at your own pace and comfort level.
What about changing facilities?
Some tidal pools have historic bathing huts that provide private spaces to change, while others have nearby ablution facilities. We also always bring two secure, private pop-up changing booths to ensure everyone has a comfortable place to change.
Will my posessions be safe whilst I’m in the water?
We do our best to keep belongings safe. On tours that include a vehicle, our driver keeps an eye on bags while the group is in the water. For self-drive experiences, we choose locations carefully and keep belongings together, but guests remain responsible for their own items. We recommend bringing only what you need and leaving valuables at home where possible.
Do you provide warm clothing?
Guests are responsible for bringing their own warm layers, such as jackets or robes. For tours that include transport, we provide warm blankets on colder days or early mornings and evenings to help you warm up comfortably.
Do you provide towels?
For tours that include transport, we provide either hooded towels or regular towels. For self-drive experiences, guests are asked to bring their own towels.
Will we be safe from the baboons at Cape Point?
Yes — we’re very aware of baboon activity and plan carefully around it. When baboons are present, we may enjoy picnics inside the vehicle or move to an alternative spot away from them. This sometimes requires flexibility on the day, but it’s all part of ensuring everyone’s safety while respecting wildlife.
Do you support any NGOs which connect underserved people to the ocean?
Yes. A portion of our fees supports I Am Water Foundation, which works to connect underserved coastal youth with the ocean through swimming, education, and access programmes. Expanding access to the sea is an important part of how we think about responsible, place-based ocean work.
Do I have to sign an indemnity form?
Yes. All guests are required to complete an indemnity form via our website before taking part in an experience.
How do I book?
You can book directly through our website using our secure, automated booking system. We’ve designed it to be as easy and pain-free as possible. If you’re a destination management company (DMC), please get in touch to learn how to access your own company login and booking code.
Can I buy the guidebooks or other merchandise on the day of the experience?
Yes. You’re welcome to purchase guidebooks and selected items on the day. We don’t accept cash, but secure card payments (including foreign cards) and SnapScan are accepted.
